Short Stories, Novellas and Fiction Books – What’s the Difference?
When setting out to write there are several things to think about. One of the first things would be how long you intend your writing to be and the audience at which you are aiming it at. There is no set guidance as to what defines a short story, novella or a fiction book as opinion differs. This article will try to give you some guidance as to what differentiates them.
A short story will tend to be less complex than a novel and will normally only focus on one storyline and only covers a short period of time. A normal definition of a short story is one that you are able to able to easily read in one sitting; others define it as work between 7,000 and 9,000 words.
A Novella will be longer than a short story but shorter than a fiction book. Normally a novella is work between 20,000 and 45,000 words. A popular example of a Novella is ‘Of Mice and Men’ by John Steinbeck. A Novella is able to develop more storylines than a short story but not as many as a fiction book. A novella normally has a concentrated unity of purpose and design; they normally all focus on an issue of a serious nature and significance.
A fiction book is a much longer narrative in the form of a story. Due to the length it has the opportunity to expand both storylines and characters. It is able to contain sub plots alongside the main storyline. Due to the length the book is able to be divided into chapters so the reader can read manageable chunks and not all at one sitting.
Although each very different they each will have one common aim, to please the reader.
